I fell in love with Owl Covern's music instantly upon hearing this release. this is Doom/Sludge at its finest, dark, heavy and full of atmosphere. I just wish I'd have stumbled upon them sooner so I could have grabbed a cassette as this one deserves a place in my collection!. 🤘
Favorite track: Wanderer of the Cosmic Void.
In search for I, I travel space.
My quest for life, my thirst for sense.
Bells are ringing loud, the same song plays again.
Every dawn is the same, yet nothing here remains.
Everything's insane, nothing makes much sense.
Rituals of emptiness.
Brief nights give in to cosmic void,
onward and backward time revolves.
In dry land I stand.
Until the hourglass runs out,
I travel space, I travel time.
Bells are ringing louder,
this song like a complaint.
Every dawn is the same,
yet nothing here remains.
Is this really it?
I haven’t found myself…
And I weep in distress…
Bells are ringing louder
So loud, so loud...
I witnessed moments of bliss,
Met countless deities.
Had many nights filled with lust.
Saw corpses covered with dust.
Children and dope fiends alike,
Restless, they wish they could dream.
Rise, rise, godlike mankind!
Create mountains made of concrete.
Unstoppable mighty creatures;
Kings of this world,
rule over dirt.
Defile the Earth.
Grinding life through teeth of steel,
spewing smoke, shredding skin.
Work like there’s no tomorrow.
Grinding life through teeth of steel,
spewing smoke, shredding skin
Machines feed on beaten flesh,
the very same that beats its own.
They prey on the voiceless.
Fluids run until the sun comes down.
Grinding life through teeth of steel
Spewing smoke, shredding skin.
The stench of power… on and on it goes.
Modern altars built to ancient demons.
Greed grins at the face of grief.
Tyrants watch tyrants fall
with their mouth wide open.
Forget not, idols shall fall.
Their kingdoms will be forgotten.
Shrouded in nothingness
They dwell in madness.
But it won’t matter, not for long…
After oceans boiled.
After clouds caught on fire.
Ice covered empty spaces.
The albatross froze in the air.
Until an echo breaks through the land ...
And the dawn mist will glow again.
about
Owl Coven's first EP. Two tracks of thunderous riffs and spellbiding melodies.
"The guitar reverberations and chilling vocal sample at the outset create a haunting but perilous atmosphere, but Owl Coven also demonstrate their ability to pound flesh and bone into goo and fragments. No clean vocals on this track, but instead a ghastly, serrated, blood-freezing sound. Relatively clean guitars surface again, unspooling a slithering, swirling melody that’s part opium dream and part cobra-swaying poison. The song will get heads nodding, too, because this coven begin to rock in the second half — punctuating their movement with an hallucinatory, squalling solo that’s a real head trip." - No Clean Singing

"Kneel down in reverence because Owl Coven has arrived with an EP that's ripe for worship! There are only two songs here, but that's more than enough to make you tremble before the ghastly sludge/doom sound that they conjure. [...] By the end, you'll probably find yourself in a daze. Don't worry, that's normal. These songs are slow, massive, and will still threaten to crush you, even through the cosmic fog." - Super Dank Metal Jams

"Slow, low and heavy is the dynamic that many of us associate with the genres of sludge metal and doom, these more sedate tempos and lower tunings somehow amplifying the music's intensity and depth in a way that standard tuning and brighter dynamics would struggle to emulate. France's Owl Coven know a thing or two about dynamics, the Nantes quartet use them to create huge monstrous rumbling grooves of sludge tinted doom flecked with pinches of psychedelic colouring and occult texturing, two examples of which can be heard on the band s debut EP "Cosmic Void". [...] Atmospheric and strangely spiritual "Cosmic Void" is a superb debut from a band who are unafraid to bring a little social commentary and self analysis to a genre of music renowned for its obsessions with the macabre and dismal, and that alone deserves our applause." - Desert Psychlist

"Bleak, cruel vocals are used as filth-caked weapons for the songs, and the overall feel of the music is of something old and monolithic that’s been awakened to destroy us all. [...] If you take all of this together, then this makes for a very engaging and enjoyable couple of tracks. They build atmosphere with ease, and mix in the various doom/sludge aspects together so flawlessly that you’ll be crying out for more material. I could easily imagine another two or three similarly epic length songs being added to this and a sterling full-length made. We can only hope." - Wonderbox Metal

Utterly hypnotic, heavy, and ethereal beyond what I can aptly describe here. It'll take you careening down a kaleidoscopic wormhole of audial bliss. cynothoglys

It's almost impossible to pick a favorite song, this whole album is an instant doom metal classic! Truly one of the best new artists of the genre!! veganfabio
